In the summer of 1990, a character rarely seen in American soap operas suddenly appears at the end of episode 1487 : amidst a Middle Eastern palace setting of draped fabrics and carpets, pasha Omar Mustafa Kamal makes his entrance. He had retrieved from his henchmen the strange talisman that an Indian shaman had given to Cruz Castillo before his death. But he discovers that the object had no effect on him, neither healing nor granting him the superhuman strength he had expected. He then orders his men to find the talisman's owner.

Cruz is thus kidnapped and taken to pasha Omar's tents. Cruz has no idea where he is and, upon hearing the word pasha, assumes he is in Turkey. Pasha Omar explains to Cruz that he is actually in North Africa, in the territory of Khareef, of which he is the pasha. He tells Cruz that he is at war with his sworn enemy, the sheikh of Kabir, who killed his parents, his sisters, and his first wife. Now remarried to twelve women, the pasha offers Cruz the choice of which woman from his harem he wants to spend the night with. His goal is for Cruz to get one of his wives pregnant so that the baby will inherit his supposed shamanic gifts. When Cruz refuses, pasha Omar drugs him without his knowledge and forces his first wife, Shaila, to sleep with him. He is unaware that they are both in cahoots to do nothing and let him think his plan has worked. But when Cruz wakes up, he is kidnapped by the sheikh of Kabir's men.

Eden Capwell, accompanied by Michael Donnelly, joins Khareef in search for Cruz. Michael, disguised as a Bedouin, delivers her to pasha Omar as a new trophy for his harem. But the pasha quickly discovers that Eden is actually Cruz's wife. Determined to make her his thirteenth wife, the pasha decides to keep Eden prisoner, making her believe he still holds Cruz captive. Eden manages to steal the talisman and offers to use it as leverage with the pasha in exchange for Cruz's release. Michael, aided by Shaila, who had escaped, informs Eden that Cruz is in fact the sheikh Idi Ben Adir's prisoner. Eden then proposes to pasha Omar that she produces a report for American television in which she will recount his war against the sheikh. To this end, she tries to present him in a favorable light, asking him to change out of his traditional clothes into a suit and tie, and to say nothing about his twelve wives... Pasha Omar agrees, finally convinced that this interview will allow the Western world to take up his cause in his war. In return, he promises to help Eden free Cruz.

The interview is a success, and several countries agree to go to war against the sheikh of Kabir. As the conflict rages, pasha Omar obtains economic arrangements from C.C. Capwell with the sheikh Idi Ben Adir to end their deadly struggle. Thus, he allows Eden, Cruz, and Michael to leave Khareef in peace and without resentment. However, he has not yet recovered the famous talisman, the origin of this whole strange storyline...
