The sizzling onscreen romance between All My Children's John Callahan and Eva LaRue has spilled over into real life. Eva and John tried to keep their love under wraps until both their divorces were settled, but they were spotted on romantic dates together.
Callahan, who plays Edmund Grey, took co-star Eva to the Kentucky Derby, where the twosome even sported matching beige outfits. "They barely noticed the horses," says a source. "They had their arms around each other, kissing, oblivious to the crowd."
When Eva, who plays Dr. Maria Santos, and her real-life mother participated in Oprah Winfrey's recent Mother's Day Fitness Walk in New York, Callahan - one of the few men to participate - was with them. "It was clear these two were more than just friends or co-stars," says a witness. "And Eva's mom was so sweet to him, treating him almost like a son-in-law."
The pair also attended this year's Daytime Emmy awards as a couple. "They took their sexy act off the screen and didn't care who saw it," says an observer. "John was constantly caressing Eva. They kissed like a couple of high school kids."
Ironically, Callahan, 40, and Eva's ex, actor John O'Hurley, are friends. The two worked together on Santa Barbara and frequently socialized. "They'd play golf together all the time," says Eva, 28. "We even had dinner with John and his wife, Linda, the night before my husband John and I got engaged."
Callahan and Linda were married for 11 years before divorcing last year. Both of the broken marriages were strained by lengthy separations due to work. When Callahan came to New York in 1992 for All My Children, wife Linda stayed in California to do graduate studies. After Eva married O'Hurley the same year, she got the All My Children part and they moved from California to New York. Her husband, John, won a role in a play in Toronto, and they were often apart. The marriage broke up soon after.
"Commuter marriages can be tough to keep strong," says a source. "And stars like Eva and John who work closely together frequently become close off the set as well. The same thing happened with James DePaiva and Kassie Wesley of One Life to Live."
John Callahan says he doesn't want to focus on the past : "After having been legally separated for over a year, the support I've received from friends, including Eva LaRue - whom I've recently started seeing - has been appreciated. Out of respect for others, it's my desire to keep the affected parties out of the spotlight to allow us to heal and move on with our lives."
