Since
the day she asked for his hand in a clearing, Eden Capwell knows that her
destiny is intimately tied to Cruz Castillo's. Since the day they exchanged vows
in that clearing, Eden knows that Cruz has become her everything, her reason for
being, her reason to live. Since the day she led him to drink the champagne
glass and find the engagement ring he slipped onto her finger, Eden knows she
could no longer live without Cruz by her side.
Since that day... No, since long before. Even before all of this. It may have even been in a past life... Their fate has been sealed since the dawn of time, for they are made for each other, living through one another. The breath exhaled by one is immediately inhaled by the other. Without this air, they could not live, they could not be. Without this miraculous breath, they would not exist.
Eden knows this. Eden learned it the hard way... Her life with Kirk Cranston... Her paralysis... So today, even with her principles and the dreams she is giving up, she knows it is all worth it for the life she wants, for the man she loves.
A moment of calm...
In Hawaii, where they have gone for a few days of vacation, Eden can close her eyes for a moment and let time pass; she can surrender herself to Cruz's arms. The hours glide over them like water over glass. Eden is well. Eden is at peace. Eden loves. Simply. Cruz is by her side. The world no longer exists. In fact, between flower leis and shell necklaces, Eden and Cruz are enjoying this new time granted to them. In a nearly empty restaurant, they return to old habits. To the sound of a slow dance, their hands meet, their arms embrace once more, their bodies merge, and their steps match... They are off for a new dance ! The first in so long. A promise : to dance all night. A lifetime...
Under the Hawaiian skies, the clouds seem to dissipate. Eden wants to enjoy this moment of respite. Fully with Cruz, she forgets the dark moments, pushing from her mind Elena Nikolas and the terrible hours locked in Cain's cabin, the dreadful hours when Cruz was locked in prison. Yes, the calm is here. To the rhythm of their dance, Eden surrenders to the imagined tomorrows she knows will become reality ! After her sister Kelly, Eden feels it is finally her turn to fully enjoy the time of regained happiness. After all, Christmas is approaching ! All dreams are possible.
Caught up in their happiness, Eden even organizes a traditional meal with vahines to teach them to dance.
The storm is approaching...
Despite the festive season, the clouds are not long in returning around the Hawaiian islands. Drawn to the volcanic earth, the wave of a new storm quickly spreads through the island's soil. So, during their Hawaiian meal, while the sun and blue skies flood Eden's world, a wind from Cruz's secret agent past brings its share of dark clouds. A man, Richard Matthews, quietly approaches Cruz. And an almost imperceptible grain of sand begins to work its way into Eden's happiness machine. Eden quickly recognizes the subtle change in Cruz. She knows the calm has passed, and after the stillness, the storm is approaching.
When
Cruz confides in her his wish to resume his work at the Agency, Eden fully
understands the consequences of his decision. She does not try to fight against
Cruz's desire; she knows it would be useless. His decision is made. The clouds
are here.
The clouds are back : the memory of other storms comes rushing back into Eden's mind. These storms have always had the effect of pushing them further apart, making the separation longer and harder. Like the weather, these storms carry names of men and women : Kirk Cranston, Elena Nikolas, Carlotta Quilvar, Martin Ellis, Victoria Lane... Today, it is Richard Matthews... And since Eden does not know the havoc this latest storm can wreak on their lives, she becomes afraid. For a moment, her heart freezes because she fears that, in the end, their wish to marry will slip further and further away...
So, ready to face this new storm, Eden abandons old principles (just as she did when she organized her engagement to Cruz), the dreams of a little girl, and chooses to act.
A destiny to seal...
Despite the storms, Eden is not a woman to be brought down. So, guided by her absolute love for Cruz, she chooses to do what must be done. She has their destiny to seal.
It takes Eden little time to organize her surprise. She steps out of their room and comes back a little later, smiling, with a Hawaiian man by her side. She immediately introduces Cruz to Reverend Molido and her wedding plan. Here. Today. After the moment of surprise, Cruz remains for a few seconds bewildered by the news. Eden, who knows Cruz's every expression, sees the two contradictory emotions passing through him. Cruz is amused and delighted by Eden's proposal. Then, caught off guard, he seems unwilling to marry here, far from their family. In fact, he tells her clearly that she should have talked to him about the plan. Hawaii, though a romantic place, is not the one for them.
Carried away by her enthusiasm, Eden quickly explains the reasons for this wild desire. And to push Cruz into accepting her request, she gives him a few seconds to reflect. For Cruz, everything is already clear in his mind : yes, he wants to marry her, but no, the wedding will not happen here. It is a great disappointment for Eden, who had not expected this answer. Reverend Molido seems barely surprised by the change in attitude of the couple and is escorted by Eden to the door of their room.
Eden is very disappointed by Cruz's response. Even though she understands his decision, it does not allow her to chase away her deepest fears. Since Cruz has accepted his new mission, Eden fears he could be hurt or worse... So, she becomes a little girl in anger and retreats to the bed to pout.
A non-wedding but a declaration of absolute love...
Eden sulks for a moment, clearly because Cruz does not understand the real motivation behind her request : she wants a baby. Is there any more beautiful declaration of love than wanting, than asking the one you love to grant you the great happiness of having a child ? Eden wants a child with Cruz, for herself, for him, for them, to materialize the strength of their love. And, as she explains (what was once a dogma in the 1980s), to have a child, you need to be married...
Moved by her words, Cruz understands through Eden's explanations that she is mostly afraid of missing out on important events in life, such as having a child. This is why she wants to move quickly, always faster... Deep inside, perhaps for the first time after the painful moments of 1987, Eden feels that time might be running out for them. What if their love was not enough to overcome all the obstacles of life ? Even though they reconcile before returning to Santa Barbara, her absolute and eternal desire to be with Cruz remains unsatisfied... They will have to wait a few more months and find Peeble Creek to know that such a place of eternity exists... There, by the ocean, there is a perfect setting to elevate their eternal love.
A non-wedding before living the "wedding" a few months later. A non-wedding that allows the couple not only to reunite but also to close the chapter on the paralysis (we remember the almost painful scenes of Eden, stuck in her wheelchair, unable to share those intimate, special dance moments). Eden and Cruz dance together again after so many months of silence in music, of mute dance steps. A moment of sharing, a gift given to A Martinez and Marcy Walker as if to signify that after Kelly and Jeffrey's fairy-tale wedding, they take center stage again. A gift to the fans to warn them : the real wedding is coming. It is perhaps also another pivotal moment for the couple, where again (rare for the time), Eden takes the lead, assumes it, and asks Cruz to give her a child... After the engagement scene in the clearing, it is a moment of emancipation for women, who, at least in romantic relationships, become the equals of men !
