It is to get more independence towards his father that Ted Capwell decides, in summer 1986, to find a job. He decides to try his luck on the radio and has an audition for a job as a disc jockey at KUSB FM, a local radio station. He has to work under the programs manager's orders, Jane Wilson. To feel less alone, he manages to make his girlfriend Hayley Benson hired as a secretary at the station.
The KUSB FM studios are constituted by two rooms; first of all, a big room which serves as reception and as switchboard room. It is there that Hayley takes the calls of the listeners which she then passes to Ted. The walls are colored, brighten up by posters of rock stars or of famous bands of the 80s. Since this room, a door allows to enter the recording studio, over which a bright display indicates when it is on the air.
Inside the studio, we find all the necessary of the perfect radio anchor : a mixing desk topped by a microphone and headphones. Walls are filled with sound equipment and with audiotapes (CDs not existing already at that time).
KUSB FM is the opportunity for Jane to reveal her double personality : the authoritarian and inflexible Jane becomes at night Roxanne, the sexy vamp, who tries to seduce Ted by phone without ever daring to reveal him her real face. Once Hayley and Ted married, it will be finished of KUSB FM. Even Jane will not refer to it any more, concentrating on her studies and her new love, Lionel Lockridge.
At the beginning of 1987, the set of the KUSB FM studios will be used again for the office of psychologist Dr. Sharon Knowles, who helps Hayley after her rape.
