We
hear about the Abernathy stables for the first time at the very beginning of
1987. Situated at 14 miles from Santa Barbara, they are the property of Mr.
Abernathy. Ted Capwell decides to come to work there as a simple groom, and
meets Jake Morton. Besides Ted and Jake, the Abernathy stables saw working Will
Morton, Jake’s father. Mr. Abernathy will give him a second chance in 1987,
but for a quite short duration, after having been surprised drinking and smoking
on his workplace.
All
the rooms of the stables are built on the same plan : walls painted in green
frame a wide space filled with yellow beams and bales of straw.
The
place is rich in maintenance and harness tools. Because besides maintaining the
places and the animals, Ted and Jake do not hesitate to borrow the horses for
ballads in the neighbouring countryside.
While
staying outside the city, the closeness of the Abernathy stables with Santa
Barbara turns out to be an asset for several characters. At the beginning of
1987, Kelly Capwell and Jeffrey Conrad come to hide there while they are
searched by the police. Then Cain Garver hides there Eden Capwell at her return
in Santa Barbara the next summer. Once Ted and Jake were launched into the
adventure of The
Lair, we shall not
hear about the Abernathy stables any more.
