All the family seems marked by Roger's behavior, the patriarch of this family, present in the memory of Augusta and Julia. Alcoholic, Roger left an undeniable imprint on his daughters' personalities. As much the one as the other, Augusta and Julia dream about independence and to release themselves from the influence of men. Because of their memories, we can deduct that Roger was either not the ideal father, nor the perfect husband. Moreover, Roger's wife is never mentioned, nor the education which she was able to transmit to her daughters. We can simply deduct her absence, which pressed on the construction of her daughters.

The inheritance of this heavy past will weigh in a different way on the future of Augusta and Julia. Determined to change radically of lifestyle, Augusta will become a master-woman, sophisticated, sure of herself and of her power of seduction on men. Augusta does not want to be of these women dependent on a man any more, as her mother could have been. She wants to treat of equal to equal with them. Is it why she does not hesitate to live love affairs quite as her husband Lionel, to manipulate the people around her, to dare to give up a commonplace life to keep her freedom to think, her freedom to live her life such as she wants it ? And it is maybe there one of the teachings that she will leave to her children, and that Laken will apply during her come-back in 1987.

Because, the Laken who comes back from her escapade to New York is not the innocent girl any more who for the only demand asked for the right to date Ted Capwell. At he return, Laken is more determined, surer of herself and especially more independent, closer to the image of Augusta than of Lionel's.

Independent from every pore, Julia is the most beautiful example of the equality between men and women. And all her life, she never has to rest to prove - to prove to herself - that she is an equal both in the professional world and in her personal life. That is why professionally she will refuse any compromise. She will also refuse any compromise in her personal life not to lose her independence and her freedom, even if it means having a child alone.
