Treason, lie and especially false appearances : such could be the creed of this family which appears under the spotlight in 1990.

At the Richards, lies are used and abused. The most surprising and the most impressive lie concerns of course Harland, the financial heart of this family, because it is linked to his identity. Hidden behind false appearances, we discover that Harland is not the one that we believe and, with this new lighting, he drags with him under the spotlight Carmen Castillo, until then straight and fair.

Well beyond his real identity, the inhabitants of Santa Barbara discover Harland's real personality : that of a man ready for anything to satisfy and consolidate his thirst of power : he does not hesitate to use violence and to have the hands soiled by his victims' blood. After all, is it not from Richard Atkins's death that Harland originated ? And it is this personality that undergoes in the everyday life Gretchen, his new wife, while Tawny sees under these false appearances and these lies only an affectionate father.

Very fast, the image of Gretchen makes a dent in too, revealing a facet almost so deceitful as her husband's : she does not hesitate to confuse Mack Blake, even if it means deceiving his feelings, to be able to enjoy her husband's fortune. Lie after lie, Gretchen does not hesitate either to cross the line of legality by kidnapping her daughter-in-law's boyfriend, Ric Castillo.

In this family where everything is only facade, only Tawny seems to possess some moral values. It is in the name of these values that she agrees to help Cruz Castillo to find Ric, even if for it she has to go against her father's interests. Unfortunately for her, it is her who will pay the expenses of this family's treasons : the discovery of her family ties with Ric will put an end to her presence in town.
