The Donnelly family is profoundly marked by Arthur's imprint who manages his loved ones as he manages the members of his hospital department : he imposes an absolute obedience to each of his decisions. Arthur is of these men who neither accept, nor understand, that you can turn away from the road which was drawn for you.

Naturally, it is the whole family which undergoes Arthur's wrath when Michael (his own flesh) decides to become a priest, or when Heather decides to choose psychiatry as specialty, instead of a nobler way, closer to the one that he chose her.

And it is with the same high-handedness that he intends to manage his children's love life. If he chose to voluntarily turn away from Michael, it is to concentrate better on Heather, for whom his hopes are not still totally lost. His choice concerns without hesitation Dr. Zack Kelton who corresponds better to the son-in-law for whom he hopes and to the professional heir that his son and his daughter did not want to be.

The family will explode, without violence, each one pursuing solitarily his way, far from Santa Barbara, with however the prospect of a new heir.
