Family of Italian origin, the DiNapoli family seems to be settled down in Santa Barbara for several years. It is under the control of a macho man that builds itself a family consisted only of women. Incapable to face the death of his wife, Frank turns out to be also quickly incapable to assume his father's role. And it is in alcohol and in extreme authority that he imagines to find a place. Profoundly marked by these years, the DiNapoli daughters build themselves alone, each of them looking for a way to fill the space left by Anna, and the lack of affection of Frank : their relationships with men are profoundly marked by the image of the father, inherited from Frank.

Having left very early the family house, Celeste, to survive, falls in prostitution, idealizing with the time her relation with Scott Clark, her youth love.

Lisa, having taken care of her younger sister following Celeste's departure, has a love-affair with a married man who will never leave his wife for her. And when she accepts this obvious fact, Lisa finds alcohol for only comfort.

Emily, the youngest, maybe too much protected by her sisters, dreams only about fairy tales, about these beautiful love stories which always end well, that she reads all the time in sentimental novels. And her dreams seem to become reality with her wedding with Greg Hugues, this illegitimate Capwell son, such as the prince charming of her novels.
