 A month has passed since Julia Wainwright and Mason Capwell discovered Sasha
Schmidt's lifeless body in their bed. A month since, fearing they would be accused of her murder, they decided to hide the corpse
first in their garage freezer, then in the Capwell family crypt at the cemetery. Yet, for several weeks now, strange phenomena have been occurring
: Julia sees the electric lights flicker in her home, hears Sasha's voice calling out to her, and feels haunted by the presence of a painting that reminds her of her former rival's
face...
Then, one fine day, a beautiful brunette with an enigmatic smile steps onto the scene at The
Lair : Sydney Schmidt, who turns out to be Sasha's sister. She meets Bunny Tagliatti, the bar owner, and confides in him her anxiety over her
sister's disappearance. She then visits Julia and Mason, who pretend to believe that Sasha left for San Francisco and never returned. Sydney appears worried while focusing her investigation on the couple. Meanwhile, the paranormal occurrences continue at Julia's house. Although
Sasha's body has mysteriously vanished from the crypt, Julia repeatedly catches glimpses of Sasha outside her home. To the dismay of an incredulous Mason, she eventually calls upon a psychic, Gladys Bittleworth, in an attempt to communicate with
Sasha's soul.
As if stepping into her
sister's shoes, Sydney, who proves to be a very talented singer, is hired by Bunny to perform at The
Lair. The two seem to hit it off, with Bunny quickly falling under her spell. However,
Sydney's true colors are finally revealed when, one evening, she goes into her kitchen, opens her freezer, and exposes Sasha's still-frozen body. It turns out Sydney loathes her sister, but intends to exploit her death to blackmail Julia and Mason. We discover that she is behind all the supernatural phenomena that have been terrifying Julia for weeks, as well as the psychic Gladys's interventions. She even sets up a new seance with the medium. But tipped off by private investigator Jack Dante, Julia and Mason uncover the truth. One night, they wait for Sydney to break into their living room disguised as Sasha, and they pull off her
mask.
Nevertheless, the identity of Sasha's killer remains a mystery. Julia and Mason pursue their investigation, and their suspicions soon turn toward the actual culprit, Laura Asher. Sydney then helps them ensnare her
: when Laura goes to The Lair at the invitation of her husband Ethan, she loses her composure upon seeing
Sasha singing at the piano. She gives herself away by blurting out that Sasha is dead, before discovering that it is actually Sydney.
The mystery
is thus solved. Julia and Mason having also something to answer for, having concealed Sasha's death and hidden her corpse,
they do not seek to make Sydney pay for her actions. This latter continues to spend time with Bunny at The
Lair for a few more days before ultimately vanishing without further
explanation...
