Discrete
and efficient, Renfield is the assistant Robert Barr would have dreamed
of if she had not already existed. We
will never know anything about her personal life - even her first name
will remain unknown, as Craig Hunt points out to her in 1990.
When she appears at
the sides of Robert Barr in June 1989, Renfield
seems to have worked for him for years. Loyal and proactive, she knows
everything about her boss's cases and main associates. Hidden behind her
thick-framed glasses, she screens out the unwanted guests crowding into
Robert's suite.
Her
sharp, sarcastic personality adds levity to tense scenes involving
Robert, the Capwells, Gina Timmons, or Ric Castillo.
If
she follows Robert when he moves from his Capwell Hotel suite to the
Capwell Enterprises offices, she however disappears in the fall when
Robert leaves the business world after the death of his employer,
Anthony Tonell.
She
returns in June of next year when Robert comes back to Santa Barbara and
sets up on a yacht to pursue his business. Despite her close
professional and friendly relationship with him, she does not seem to
notice any change when his twin brother Quinn Armitage secretly replaces
him. Perhaps because, since her return,
she no longer wears her famous glasses...
As
Robert / Quinn gradually withdraws from business, the part of Renfield
eventually disappears without she could participate to uncover her boss's
true identity...
