 Young
police officer Ramon Fonseca makes his first appearance at the very end
of 1988, at the Santa Barbara police station. Dynamic and dedicated, he
seems to take the experienced Cruz Castillo as a mentor and respect his
authority.
The
city is then shaken by a wave of rapes and a murder attributed to the video
rapist, whose true identity is still unknown. After brutally
raping Eden Castillo, the rapist claims to be the father of her baby,
born on the night of January 1st. Cruz knows his daughter is a potential
target and chooses Ramon Fonseca, in whom he has complete trust, to
watch over the maternity ward nursery and thus ensure the physical
safety of his baby. But this does not prevent tragedy : Adriana is
kidnapped, believed to be by the video rapist, who turns
out to be Dr. Zack Kelton, Eden's gynecologist, who therefore had access
to the nursery.
Cruz
once again calls on Ramon to help with his investigation. A few weeks
after Adriana's disappearance, Ramon shares some terrible news with Cruz
: a baby has been found dead in a dumpster in a poor neighborhood of the
city. Cruz later goes there with the psychic Sandra Mills, who senses
that the baby in question was not Adriana. Strangely, Ramon then does
everything he can to badmouth Sandra to Cruz, straining the relationship
between the two men. It is Ramon again who accompanies Cruz to the hotel
room of Catherine Thoreau, the nanny who cared for Adriana after her
kidnapping and whose body was found lifeless. Once again, it is a false
lead : no clues are found at the scene to advance the investigation.
One
evening, while Sophia Capwell visits Sandra Mills at her daughter
Kelly's house, Sandra senses the presence of Catherine's killer. The two
women take refuge in a closet. Cruz arrives to rescue them and finds
himself face to face with Ramon, who is holding him at gunpoint. Ramon
manages to escape and takes refuge in Father Michael Donnelly's chapel,
where he takes Michael, Heather Donnelly and Laura Asher hostage.
Unbeknownst to Ramon, Cruz manages to enter the chapel and disarm him.
Ramon is arrested.
His
true identity is revealed : Ramon is actually the brother of Angel
Ramirez, a drug dealer who has crossed paths with Cruz many times in
recent years and who is currently imprisoned because of him. It was to
avenge his brother that he accepted an offer from an unknown man (who
will turn out to be Kirk Cranston) to kidnap Adriana for money. Since
Zack had already kidnapped Adriana himself, Ramon ultimately settled for
paying Catherine Thoreau to take care of the baby.
A
cog among many in this bizarre kidnapping case which is far from over,
Ramon Fonseca likely ends up in prison, deep in a cell from which he
will never emerge...
