Contacted
by a woman with long and red nails who turns out to be Augusta
Lockridge, Jake and his associate receive a simple mission order :
prevent by all means the return to Santa Barbara of Joe Perkins.
It
is at San Francisco bus station that they are waiting for their target.
As soon as they see him buying his ticket, they push him aside and drive
him to the toilet where they beat him. While hitting him, they deliver a
message : do not go back to Santa Barbara. Despite their efforts and
threats, they cannot prevent Joe Perkins from getting on the bus to
Santa Barbara. They decide to follow the bus.
On
the way, obeying Augusta Lockridge's orders, they try to kill Joe
Perkins by shooting bullets through the bus windows. Again, they fail.
They end their day by admitting their failure to their boss.
They
are again solicited by Augusta Lockridge a few months later, despite the
failure of their first mission. This second mission seems as simple as
the first one : they must take the Countess Armonti in a stable to force
her to leave the city and return to Italy. Posing as the Countess'
driver, they succeed in kidnapping her and, despite her protests, take
her to a stable. They drop her off in front of Augusta, then wait
outside for the end of the fight. Curiously, it is the Countess who asks
them to take their boss home.
Men
of dubious efficiency, they could have repeatedly over the years come
back to the forefront for other missions mandated by an Augusta
Lockridge increasingly wacky.
