It
is through Robert Barr's adventures in Mexico, in late October 1989, that we are
introduced to the captivating Helena. Feeling hunted by his boss, Anthony
Tonell, Robert goes on the run and takes refuge in El Diablo, a small community
built around a gold mine belonging to Capwell Enterprises, now under Tonell's
control. Hoping to infiltrate the operation, he starts a fight in a bar to
attract the attention of the woman in charge of the mine, and thus meets Helena.
Beautiful
and charismatic, Helena runs the El Diablo mine with an iron fist, the only
woman in a man's world and in one of the most dangerous and precarious working
environments imaginable. Helena quickly falls under the spell of Robert, who
calls himself Chance, and hires him to work in the mine. She gives him a room on
the premises and soon joins him there to sleep with him.
However,
it quickly becomes clear that the mine's operations are far from legitimate.
Helena is in fact involved in the death of one of the workers, Arturo, whom she
buries under cover of night with Aristides, the mine's foreman. She also
secretly organizes, together with Anthony Tonell and Craig Hunt, the large-scale
transport of gold bars by train.
The
trust Helena immediately placed in Robert begins to fade when Kelly Capwell
arrives and pretends to be his wife. In order to protect Kelly's cover, Robert
explains to Helena that he is indeed married, but on the verge of divorce. Cruz
Castillo then arrives at the mine, convinced that it is Eden, not Kelly, who has
joined Robert there. When Helena catches him, he introduces himself as Craig
Hunt. Helena believes him to be Anthony Tonell's henchman, his new employer
since he took over Capwell Enterprises, owners of the mine. She therefore has no
hesitation in revealing the mine's true nature to him : the gold bars are
actually concealing plutonium. Without realizing it, she puts Cruz on the trail
of the train leaving the mine, which is supposed to transport a huge shipment of
plutonium into the United States.
Sadly,
Helena does not witness the rest of the storyline, as the character disappears
at that point, remaining a prisoner of El Diablo for the rest of her life...
