As
Eden Capwell, recently hired as a
journalist for the local TV station KSB
8, is about to endure one of the most traumatic assaults
imaginable, a new character is introduced with the clear intention of
becoming, in the eyes of the audience, the number one suspect in this
heinous crime.
Accompanied
by the young Amado, whom Cruz
Castillo has taken under his wing, Eden meets Critter
in one of the city's poorer neighborhoods. While she only intends to
interview him, Critter immediately reacts with suspicion and hostility,
unaccustomed to members of high society taking any interest in him or
his environment.
When
a member of Critter's gang, a man named Stick,
dies from his injuries at Dr. Scott
Clark's clinic, Critter is placed on the list of suspects. Cruz
becomes concerned about Eden's professional interactions with the young
man and asks her to arrange a meeting with him at the beach bar. However,
Lieutenant Vic Boswell, having
been informed of the meeting, intervenes and has Critter arrested. Eden
fears that the trust she had begun to build with him will be destroyed,
as he could understandably believe she set him up.
Critter
is eventually released. He then shows up at the KSB 8 studio, armed, and
takes Eden hostage live on air. Cruz and Vic Boswell intervene and
rescue her. Despite the violence of the act, Eden makes excuses for
Critter and declares on air the following day that he had understandable
reasons to resent her, and that his weapon was not even loaded. Critter
is once again released by the police. However, Eden begins to fear for
her safety, especially as she receives frequent anonymous threatening
phone calls, and an ominous presence seems to linger around her home.
Upon
learning that Critter is indeed responsible for Stick's death, Cruz
believes he has tracked him down to a warehouse, only to realize too
late that he has targeted the wrong person. At the same time, Eden is
brutally attacked and raped in their home. Convinced that Critter is the
assailant, Cruz finds him at the police station, where he has been
arrested yet again, and threatens to kill him.
Although
Eden initially believes Critter could be her attacker, she begins to
doubt it when she does not recognize his voice on recordings played for
her by the police.
Critter
remains the prime suspect for a time, until other potential culprits
take precedence : Major Phillip Hamilton,
Cain Garver, T.J.
Daniels, and finally the real culprit, Dr. Zack
Kelton. Critter's ethnic and social background ultimately made
him an ideal suspect, to mislead for a time viewers about the identity
of the true criminal...
