"I'm
two-for-two now on soap", smiles a contented Peter Love, who began his second
contracted role as Ricardo "Ric" Castillo on Santa Barbara - this
past April. "I'm so blessed. I really arm. I've got friends who have been
up for 25 soaps and never gotten any of them. And here I am already on my second
major role."
Peter's dreamed about portraying A Martinez's (Cruz) kid brother ever since he appeared on Ryan's Hope as college preppie Mark D'Angelo. He'd heard about the part "through the grapevine," but at the time wasn't free to look into it. Fate, however, was obviously on his side, because the role of Ric was never cast.
Then a few years went by, Peter's Ryan's Hope contract ended, and suddenly he was free. "I left Ryan's Hope in June of 1988", he says. "I took a break, stayed in New York, and just enjoyed myself for a while. I didn't move out to California until October of 1988."
In town for two short days, he immediately landed a recurring role on The Bold and the Beautiful as the third party in a potential Bryan Genesse (ex-Rocco) / Nancy Sloan (ex-Katie) triangle. The part didn't pan out, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Shortly thereafter, Peter learned that Santa Barbara was once again searching for someone to play Cruz's bad, little brother.
"I went to Janet Di Lauro's Halloween party," he laughs, making sure to give his interviewer proper mention, "and found out about this part coming up on Santa Barbara."
Peter's agents were adamantly against his testing for the role. "They didn't want me to audition for a soap," he explains. "But my whole philosophy is that work brings work. If you're working you'll get other work. I didn't want to be a prima donna and say, "I won't do soaps." There's nothing wrong with doing soaps. So I left my agents."
