Kathy Shower, who was Playboy magazine's May 1985, playmate of the month, has joined the cast of NBC-TV's daytime serial Santa Barbara (Mondays Fridays, 3-4 PM).

In Santa Barbara, in which she will appear beginning in October, Shower will portray a young woman whose picture is taken by photographer Nick Hartley, played by David Haskell. Her character will become the center of controversy in town when Hartley submits the photographs to Playboy magazine and she decided to accept an offer to become a Playboy playmate.

Shower has made numerous television guest appearance on such shows as Airwolf, Simon and Simon and NBC's Knight Rider. Also, she spent 17 months on Broadway portraying Angel in the original cast of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Shower, 32, the mother of two children Mindy, 9, and Melonie, 6, is a native of Brookville, Ohio.

Said Shower about her new Santa Barbara role, "A daytime serial is the best kind of professional discipline an actor can have. I've been a fan of the show since it premiered and look forward to working with such a stellar cast."

Bridget and Jerome Dobson, creators, head writers and co-executive producers of the program, said they choose Shower from among many other candidates for "her elegance, style and talent which will compliment the glamorous background of the show."

Santa Barbara achieved a 4.3 rating and a 14 share the week of May 27, its best rating, and share ever, and increased its household share during the two consecutive quarters of this year, according to the Nielsen Television Index.

The series, which premiered July 30, 1984, stars Dame Judith Anderson, Grace Zabriskie, Nicolas Coster, Louise Sorel, A Martinez, Charles Bateman, Lane Davies and Marcy Walker. It is produced at the NBC Studios in Burbank, California, and on Southern California locations, by Dobson Productions and New World Television.
