Launched in July 1984, a new soap opera appears on the NBC screens : Santa Barbara. Produced and written by confirmed professionals, Bridget and Jerry Dobson, the show stands out very quickly from its competitors by a very special style. Supported by a recognized casting of quality at the time of its launch, the show will soon attract many viewers and laudatory critics for as much the quality of the actors play than for the writing and the directing.
It will be necessary to wait for the year 1987 so that the profession, through the Emmy awards, really recognize this "Santa Barbara touch."
The show will afterward lose viewers in the United States while breaking records all over the world. Unfortunately, the international success won't be enough to save it. And although attracted by this specific Dobsons spirit (back at the control of the show after a long legal battle), recognized and awarded players (Kim Zimmer, Stephen Nichols...), quality writers (Pam Long...), anything will be able to halt its decline anymore.
Twenty years later, what remains from the show ? For France, obviously, a taste of unfinished business.
But the professionals and the viewers keep of these 2137 episodes the image of a show which has renewed the soap-opera codes, some writers who were able to be inventive and innovative (for both plots and dialogue), some actors who were able to inject real creativity and inventiveness in the soul of their characters, and finally a clear originality in the tone, the music, the writing of the characters, the design... In short, all of the criteria which, even today, make that Santa Barbara and all its team are a reference in the soap-opera world (rarely a show has received so many awards in such a short time), and that the spirit of the show still lives, years after its disappearance from our screens.
The list below shows for all men and women who contributed to the success of Santa Barbara, the nominations they obtained for this show or any other production. The logo of the trophy appears when the award has been won.
