In 1987 moves to the Santa Barbara University a world-renowned scientist, Dr. Alex Nikolas.
If the scientific researches that he can lead remain unclear, Alex holds a fairly well equipped laboratory : test tubes, flasks and chemicals are next to microscopes, electronics and even a computer. If he is rarely seen with students, Alex will be assisted for a while by Jeffrey Conrad as a lab assistant.

It is in this laboratory that Alex will work on the serum susceptible to save Caroline Wilson of the strange virus of which she was a victim back from Guatemala.
